The digital highway toll is strictly purchased for the following 6 sections of the Austrian highway network.

  • Autostrada A 9 Pyhrn: between the junction Spital/Pyhrn and the junction Adning (Bosruck tunnel), as well as between the junction St. Michael and Übelbach (Gleinalm tunnel).
  • Autobahn A 10 Tauern: between Flachau junction and Rennweg junction (Tauern and Katschberg tunnel).
  • Highway A 11 Karawanken: between junction St. Jakob in Rosental and the state border in the Karawanken tunnel.
  • A 13 Brenner motorway: tolls are required on the entire A 13 motorway.
  • Expressway S 16 Arlberg: between junction St. Anton am Arlberg and the junction Langen am Arlberg.

Vignette Austria vehicles over 3.5 tons (trucks, buses, motorhomes)

Go-BOX equipment is required, see the device information section.

Austria road tax for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

All vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tonnes are subject to a mileage-based “GO” tax when using Austrian autobahns and expressways.

If you travel in Austria with a truck, bus or motorhome, you should know that the toll can only be paid with a GO-Box that is installed on the vehicle’s windshield.

The GO-Box is the only official equipment of the Austrians with which carriers can pay road tolls in Austria.

This equipment can be collected from any of the more than 175 GO sales points in Austria and beyond.

GO-BOX for trucks, GO-BOX for buses and motorhomes

Payment methodsDrivers have two options: the post-pay option (retroactive payment) – local GO-Box device.
The pre-pay variant (payment in advance by charging the device) – only the local GO-Box ASFINAG device.
Toll machineThe GO-Box payment device is mandatory for vehicles over 3.5 tons!
Useful informationGO-Box machines can be picked up from any GO point, see the list and map of distribution points here.

Within 28 days from the date of purchase, the GO-Box device must be declared and validated emission class.

The copy of the registration card and the copy after the CEMT must be sent to Asfinag.

If the emission class is not declared within this interval, you risk a minimum fine of 240 euros!

The post-pay payment method can be made with a device installed by the driver.

It can be obtained from any Go-Maut distribution point, the cost of issuing it being 5 euros.

The pre-pay payment method is recommended for carriers who travel occasionally.

Drivers can purchase and charge their devices with credit based on the fuel card.

The device can be loaded with a minimum amount of 75.00 euros, and the maximum balance can reach up to 500 euros (VAT included).
For more details, visit the GO – Maut website, https://www.go-maut.at/portal/portal.
Retroactive payment (post-pay)The toll can be paid retroactively within 5 hours or 100 km (in both directions).

The driver must stop at the nearest GO distribution point, present the device and declare the route.
Tunnels and bridgesMost tunnel tolls are included in the GO-Maut system.

Separately from the system, the tolls for the Felbertauern Strasse and the Karawanken Tunnel can be paid using the fuel card.
Payment options for registered customersThe pre-pay toll system is recommended for less frequent passages through Austria.

The Go-Box device can be loaded with a minimum of €75 up to €400, some carriers can do this loading directly with the Shell card.

In which currency can the vignette for Austria be paid?

Euro is the legal currency for 16 member states of the European Union including Austria. When you purchase the vignette for Austria, you will pay in euros.

If you buy the vignette online or physically at bank terminals (POS) with your bank card, it is good to know that it is not mandatory to have a euro card, you can just as well pay in lei, forints, zlotys, etc.

Great attention to the lei – euro payment rate. Always check what the currency is valued at at the time of purchase to avoid surprises later.

Do you want to purchase the Austria cash vignette?

If you choose to purchase the vignette from gas stations or from the more than 1,316 points of sale, make sure you always have euros in cash with you because you will only be able to pay in euros!

Our recommendations:

  • Be careful with physical payments using bank terminals (POS), make sure your bank accepts card payment in foreign countries.
  • For online payments, make sure you have activated the online card payment option

Do I need a vignette in Austria for the trailer as well?

No additional vignette is required for trailers, mobile homes and motorcycle trailers.

How much is a vignette fine in Austria?

If you buy a physical vignette, be sure to stick it as visible as possible, on the lower left side of the windshield or behind the rearview mirror. The same recommendation applies to motorcycles.

Their color changes every year, so it is very visible to a police crew, customs officers or workers from the Control and Monitoring Service whether or not you have a valid vignette.

The color for the Austria 2022 vignette is orange.

If you are caught on Austrian autobahns without a vignette, the fine is €120 if you pay on the spot (€65 for motorbikes).

If the vignette is altered (damage to the vignette, traces of the vignette, etc.), respectively if the toll machine is missing or has insufficient funds, the fine is 240 EUR (130 EUR for motorcycles).

However, if you ran out of money in your account, you have 5 hours (or 100km) to load the amount of money to pay for the vignette.

If you refuse to pay on the spot, the fine in court proceedings can range from €300 to €3,000.

To make sure the vignette is active and not risk getting a fine, you can check right here.

I was caught without a vignette in Austria, what do I do?

Obviously you pay the fine for the Austria vignette, there is nothing else you can do.

Attention – the smallest fine is 120 euros and it is also paid if you did not stick the vignette in a visible place!

If you do not pay the fines for the Austrian vignette on time, it increases and ends up exceeding 300 euros, the maximum fine being 3,000 euros!

Where do I pay the vignette fine in Austria?

It is recommended that the fine be paid on the spot if you can.

If the fine is sent in a few days/weeks by post to your home address, follow the instructions on the payment notice and the account where you need to transfer the money for the fine.
