Do you pay the Croatia vignette or the Croatia motorway toll?

One good thing for drivers with Croatia as their destination is the fact that there is NO Croatia vignette, only the motorway tolls. The Croats did not implement the Croatia vignette, but charge highways, expressways, bridges and tunnels.

Croatia has a complex and well-developed system of highways, and their tolls are paid according to the kilometers traveled and the type of vehicle.

The Croatia motorway toll is calculated at approximately 6-7 euros/100km.

Road tax payment systems Croatia

There are two types of toll payment systems in Croatia, depending on their implementation at the level of tunnels, bridges and highways.

Closed system

You will find the closed payment system at bridges and tunnels, but also at certain shorter sections of highway in Croatia.

Through the closed system, you will have to pay only one toll when entering the road section. This is a fixed fee, and you won’t have anything to pay when you leave.

Open system

In the case of the open payment system, you will go through a toll station at the start of the motorway, where you will receive a ticket. At the end of the section of motorway you have traveled, you will pay the Croatia motorway tax on the basis of the ticket, but it will differ depending on the type of vehicle and the kilometers travelled.

!Attention!: Be very careful with the ticket you receive when entering the road section, because if you cannot present the ticket at the end of the highway distance traveled, you will have to pay twice the equivalent of the longest section of highway that you can travel in depending on your vehicle category.

How can I pay motorway toll in Croatia?

You can pay the Croatia motorway toll (Croatia vignette) at the toll stations for each type of system you pass through:

  • cash – in euros or Croatian kuna;
  • debit/credit card;
  • fuel cards.

Attention!: Between June and September, a seasonal surcharge of 10% is charged.

According to the penalties for failure to pay the Croatia highway toll (Croatia vignette), the driver of the vehicle will be penalized in the amount of twice the rate for the longest route corresponding to the category of the vehicle, in the following cases:

– the driver no longer has the ticket issued when entering the highway section;

– the driver presents himself at the toll station 24 hours after issuing the ticket, having no justification for this delay;

– if the data recorded on the ticket issued at the entrance to the highway can no longer be used to calculate the toll.
